The Technology

When you hear about high-profile cancer patients heading to Europe, they’re not just going for the progressive treatment and quality of care—they’re going for the highly sophisticated technology and the innovative techniques that technology allows. The Farber Center for Radiation Oncology is the first and only radiation oncology center in the area to acquire the Elekta Infinity with Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) technology, the next generation in radiation treatment for cancer and the reason those in search of the most advanced care often travel abroad.

Developed by international medical technology group Elekta, the breakthrough machine monitors treatment in real-time 3D imaging, providing faster and more accurate treatments that improve, extend and save lives. By incorporating the versatility of administering treatment in either one or several rotations of the linear accelerator, the machine enables doctors to customize a more precise treatment method than ever before. Increased precision helps doctors deliver more radiation to the target while sparing healthy tissue and decreasing treatment time for more focused, effective, and efficient therapy. From the patient’s perspective, Elekta VMAT significantly reduces treatment time and minimizes unnecessary radiation. From the doctor’s perspective, that reduction in treatment time means greatly improved accuracy in targeting the tumor and the flexibility to either increase the dose to the tumor or reduce side effects to potentially improve outcomes.

In addition to the Elekta VMAT, the Farber Center will include a host of advanced, innovative technologies that promise faster treatment, fewer side effects, and greater potential for cure, actively raising the standard of human care. Among the powerful new tools available are:
• State-of-the-art linear accelerators
• Sophisticated 3D treatment planning computers
• IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy)
• IGRT (Image Guided Radiation Therapy)
• Stereotactic Radiosurgery for brain and spinal cord lesions
• Body Radiosurgery for lung, prostate and liver disease
• HDR Brachytherapy (radioactive implants) for prostate, skin, gastrointestinal, and gynecological cancers
• MammoSite and AccuBoost for breast cancer

All of these technologies and techniques are considered the “gold standard” in cancer treatment today, which, coupled with the world-class expertise of top radiation oncologists and pain management care from a foremost authority, drastically improves both quality of treatment and quality of life.
