Help Bring Lauren Home

June 10th, 2011

This is a special message from David Spierer, Lauren’s uncle. David is married to Dr. Marnee Spierer who is a part of The Farber Center Family. Our support and prayers go out to the entire Spierer family. Please donate to the Lauren Fund at www.iuhillel.org.

Here is David’s Message:

Hi all,

Hard to believe we are coming up on the end of Day 7. Here in Bloomington, we have set up a powerful command center with the sole focus of bringing Lauren home safely. We have been getting incredible cooperation from the local merchants, students and volunteers every day and we are continuing to pepper the internet through local and national media as well as social networks. We have also offered a reward for information leading to bringing Lauren home. All of this and still no major revelations in the case.

We are changing our tact with our poster campaign to include the tag lines “Anything Small Could be Big” and “Speak Up.” We feel that this may strike a chord in some of the students or younger individuals in the community who may have seen something that night. Lauren’s story will be on America’s Most Wanted this weekend. I believe it airs Saturday at 9:00pm.

Lauren’s search fund is slowly growing and the generosity of people around the country and around the world has been nothing short of incredible. Those funds will be used to assist in the search effort, including but not limited to, supplies (water, food, sunscreen, outdoor gear), alternative rescue efforts (waterways, rough terrain, mountain ranges) legal fees…etc. Also, keep in mind that the funds that are not used will be used in Lauren’s honor.

Needless to say, this has become a surreal situation, seeing a family member on TV everyday, and knowing that the resolution may be harder to fathom than anything we have experienced thus far. It is so helpful that family is here together working in this effort. We are staying positive and keeping ourselves busy with a comprehensive list of projects and issues to address.

I just want to say thank you to my family and friends for making this horrible event just a little bit easier.

Triple Negative Breast Cancer

June 3rd, 2011

As you know when I come across an amazing foundation or blog I like to spread the word. While doing some research on breast cancer I came across The Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation. As you may know, subtypes of breast cancer are generally diagnosed based upon the presence, or lack of, three “receptors” known to fuel most breast cancers: estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). A receptor is a protein that lives inside or on the surface of a cell and binds to something in the body to cause the cell to react. But triple-negative breast cancers need different types of treatments because they are estrogen receptor-negative, progesterone receptor- negative and HER2 negative. Medicines like tamoxifen, which targets the estrogen receptor, and trastuzumab (Herceptin), which targets HER2, are not helpful in treating triple-negative breast cancer. Instead, chemotherapy along with radiation has been shown to be the most effective treatment for triple-negative breast cancer. There are a lot of myths out there and this site does a wonderful job of educating patients and providing resources for clinical trials and support.

About TNBC Foundation

Nancy Block-Zenna

The Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation was founded in 2006 in honor of Nancy Block-Zenna, a young woman who was diagnosed at age 35 with triple negative breast cancer and died 2 1/2 years later in 2007.

In response to Nancy’s diagnosis, her close friends launched the TNBC Foundation to raise awareness and support research in the area of triple negative breast cancer. It was Nancy’s hope that, as her daughter Jolie grows older, triple negative breast cancer will no longer be the threat it is today.

Their mission is to raise awareness of triple negative breast cancer and to support scientists and researchers in their effort to determine the definitive causes of triple negative breast cancer, so that effective detection, diagnosis, prevention and treatment can be pursued and achieved.

Radiosurgery at The Farber Center

March 22nd, 2011

The only Elekta Infinity in NYC

Like CyberKnife, Elekta is the only other radiation system to use Monte Carlo based dose calculations. The Monte Carlo Based dose calculation is the most accurate statistical method of mathematical and physics-based calculations. What this means for the patients is the most accurate way of knowing the dose you plan on delivering and the dose they will actually receive. With Elekta Infinity and Monte Carlo calculations we can now perform optimal radiosurgery.

Radiosurgery is a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors anywhere in the body, including the prostate, lung, brain, spine, liver, pancreas and kidney. The treatment – which delivers beams of high dose radiation to tumors with extreme accuracy – offers new hope to patients worldwide.

3 TO 5 DAY TREATMENT FOR LUNG PATIENTS:

Stereotactic Body Radiosurgery (SRS) and Radiotherapy (SBRT) as an alternative to lung cancer surgery and has yielded very high cure rates. These techniques present elderly patients, patients with severe lung disease, patients who refuse surgery, patients with severe heart disease, and other patients with poor health a curative alternative to lung cancer surgery. Stereotactic body radiosurgery not surgery at all. SRS and SBRT lung cancer treatment is an outpatient procedure that is performed in no more than five treatment visits to The Farber Center. SRS and SBRT are painless and patients can continue their daily activities without difficulty. They utilizes multiple tightly conformed radiation beams converging at the lung tumor. A specially designed body frame immobilizes the patient and decreases the movement of the lung tumor due to breathing. With this technology, very little lung receives radiation. The low volume of lung exposed to radiation allows very high doses to be given to the lung tumor leading to cure rates comparable to surgery. Because of the low volume lung exposure SRS and SBRT haev a low risk of long term lung complications in the treatment of lung cancer.
SRS and SBRT are promising new technologies for stage one lung cancer. Lung cancer surgery remains the gold standard. SRS and SBRT are used for patients who could not tolerate lung cancer surgery or would rather not have the lung cancer surgery.

Who is a Candidate for Stereotactic Body Radiosurgery/Radiotherapy Lung Cancer Treatment?

Patients with stage one non-small cell lung cancer who are unwilling or unable to undergo lung cancer surgery are candidates for SRS/SBRT. Typically patients are unable or unwilling to undergo lung cancer surgery because of older age or poor general health. Stage one non small lung cancer is categorized as a lung tumor with the histology of non small cell (squamous cell, large cell, adenocarcinoma) and no spread to the lymph nodes. In most circumstances, the patient has a needle biopsy demonstrated the histology. Patients must also have a PET scan that demonstrates no lymph node involvement.

5 DAY TREATMENT FOR PROSTATE PATIENTS:
Stereotactic radiosurgery/radiotherapy are highly successful alternative cancer treatment methods performed as an outpatient procedure and given over the course of five (5) days. Because it is non-invasive, there are fewer risks for complications. Prostate Radiosurgery/Radiotherapy at The Farber Center involves no hormone therapy, a high rate of erectile function preservation and no fiducial markers (fiducial markers are gold seeds or stainless steel screws that are implanted in and/or around a soft tissue tumor, or within the bony spine, to act as a radiologic landmark, to define the target lesion’s position).

Who is a Candidate for Stereotactic Body Radiosurgery/Radiotherapy Prostate Cancer Treatment? Stereotactic radiosurgery, or stereotactic radiotherapy, is a technique that shows great promise in the treatment of early stage prostate cancer.

Please feel free to call 212 300-0663 to speak with Dr. Farber regarding stereotactic radiosurgery and radiotherapy. He would be happy to answer any questions. Or, you can email any questions to lafarbermd@thefarbercenter.com. We can easily obtain patients films and records for review if necessary.

Did you know that your Breast Reconstruction is covered by insurance?

March 11th, 2011

The Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA) of 1998 is also known as Janet’s Law, named after Janet Franquet, who was denied reconstructive surgery after a mastectomy. The Long Island, N.Y., woman was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer in 1997. Her insurance company denied her breast reconstruction because it considered the surgery cosmetic rather than medically necessary. During a lengthy appeals process, which Franquet eventually won, her doctor performed the surgery for free.
Meanwhile, Franquet’s drew the support of former New York Sen. Alfonse M. D’Amato, who sponsored WHCRA in Congress and helped pushed through the legislation, which was signed into law on Oct. 21, 1998.

WHCRA is a federal law that requires all sponsored group health plans, insurance companies, individual policies and health maintenance organizations offering medical and surgical benefits with respect to a mastectomy must also offer coverage for reconstructive surgery in a manner determined in consultation with the attending physician and the patient. WHCRA ensures that your coverage includes:
1. Reconstruction of the breast on which the mastectomy was performed.
2. Surgery and reconstruction of the other breast to create a symmetrical appearance.
3. Prostheses (breast implants).
4. Treatment for physical complications of the mastectomy, including lymphedema (swelling caused by an accumulation of lymph fluid in the arm).

WHCRA applies to three types of health insurance coverage, according to the Department of Health and Human Services:

1. Self-funded group plans
2. Fully insured group plans
3. Individual health insurance plans

How WHCRA works
WHCRA amended the Public Health Service Act and the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA). It is administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). It does not require group health plans or individual health insurance companies to cover mastectomies. Instead, it requires those plans and insurers that already provide coverage for mastectomies to also pay for breast reconstruction surgery in connection with a mastectomy.
WHCRA does not prohibit plans and insurers from imposing deductibles or co-payments for benefits relating to breast reconstruction surgery following a mastectomy. However, these deductibles or co-payments must be consistent with those charged for other benefits under the health plan.

It’s against federal law for a health insurance company to deny you a policy or fail to renew your health insurance coverage solely for the purpose of avoiding WHCRA’s requirements. In addition, insurers must not penalize your doctor for complying with WHCRA or provide financial incentives to induce your doctor to furnish care that is not consistent with WHCRA rules.

Although WHCRA covers most women with group health plans and individual insurance, the law does not apply to everyone, according to the DOL. If your employer is a church or state or local school district, and the plan is self-insured, your employer is exempt from WHCRA. It does not apply to state high-risk pools either. Although these plans may indeed cover mastectomies, they do not have to cover breast reconstruction or implants.

Some state laws provide more protections than WHCRA. To learn more, contact your state’s insurance department.
